Another fixture of the Place des Arts is the Opéra de Montréal, founded in 1980 and the largest francophone opera company in North America. At the heart of the Opéra de Montréal’s mission is bringing new artists to opera and expanding its audience—ticket deals for those under 30 are common and the calendar of performances includes accessible, perennial favorites, as well as works that will appeal to more serious opera buffs. A half-hour long PreOpera talk for only $5 provides an overview of the work you are about to see (though note they are in French followed by a short English summary). After 35 seasons and 1003 performances of 95 operas, the Opéra de Montréal can boast that over 2 million viewers and listeners have seen or heard their productions, many through Radio Canada broadcasts.
