Everyone knows and loves mango sticky rice (khao niaow ma muang), Thailand's ubiquitous dessert. A great way to sample a variety of others is to step off the tourist path and head to a local market. Displayed in rows, neatly-tied bags of brightly hued treats tempt passersby, despite their curious appearance.
Kha nom bua loi stars rice flour balls with taro root and pumpkin; lot chong nam kathi features rice flour noodles flavoured with pandan (lending them a vibrant green colour); while ruam mit is a bit of everything. But it's the pairing of simple black rice with coconut milk (khao neow dam piag) that outshines the rest.
