An impressive estate, completed in 1833 and overlooking Sligo Bay, Lissadell House has magnificent views and a rich history. Lissadell was famous as the childhood home of Constance Markievicz, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, the first woman to be elected to Dail Eireann (the Irish parliament) and the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons at Westminster, London (where she declined to take her seat). The poet WB Yeats was a family friend and stayed at Lissadell many times, immortalizing the house in his poetry. Constance’s sister Eva was a poet of distinction and an active suffragist while their brother Josslyn created one of the premier horticultural estates in Europe at the house. Take a guided tour of the house or wander the gardens and woodland walks, taking in the Alpine Garden and the walled Kitchen Garden.
