Preserving Karonese Culture At Lingga Village, North Sumatra
Between the lands of the Batak Toba and the volcanic highlands of the Karo people of North Sumatra is a little known village where the regions' history is being preserved. The Lingga village is a window into the lives of the ancestors of Karonese people. Travelling there with Karonese friends whose own village no longer has a solid knowledge of their history, was a humbling experience as we entered traditional houses once occupied by their great grandparents, and learnt in detail of their customs and lost spirituality.
The village is small but not far off the beaten track. A short visit here will be sure to enlighten the inquisitive traveller about the diversity of the cultural heritage in North Sumatra, and provide support to those who wish to preserve and share it.
