Ningxia Night Market (寧夏夜市) is known for its food. Aside from the typical night market offerings of oyster omelets, stinky tofu, sausages, etc., Ningxia has something I never heard of until a friend found it: mochi shaved ice.
Shaved ice is a typical Taiwanese dessert, particularly popular in the hot, sticky summer. Common toppings include fresh mango (when in season), condensed milk, tapioca pearls, other fresh seasonal fruits, etc. However, at Jilin (the name of the stand) they put fresh mochi on the ice.
There are two flavors for the mochi: sesame or peanut. If you get two or more mochi on your ice you can at least get one of each flavor. The flavor chosen for the mochi also determines what is sprinkled over the ice: ground sesame or ground peanut. Or if you get both flavors, both will be sprinkled on.
To get to Ningxia Night Market take the MRT to Zhongshan station (中山) on the red line, one stop north of Taipei Main station. Take exit 2 and make a right heading west on Nanjing W. Rd. (南京西路), toward the Starbucks. Continue down Nanjing for about 10 minutes until you hit Ningxia St. (寧夏街).
