Just inside the breakwaters of Limón Bay on Panama’s Caribbean coast, vessels of all sizes wait their turn to enter the canal—from tugs to tankers, pleasure craft to cargo ships. At the tip of Fort Sherman, a former American outpost seen in the Bond film Quantum of Solace, stands the 1883 French-made and vaguely Eiffel-Towerish Toro Point Lighthouse. Fort San Lorenzo just to the west and Portobelo to the east are Spanish forts included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.
