Red Mary's Leaping Horse

Large arrow left

In the wild limestone vastness of the Burren in county Clare stands a dilapidated castle, home of an ancient chief, Conor O'Brien and his wife Mary Rua (or Red Mary). The castle, Leamaneh (or Leaping Horse) is obviously host to a number of entities, both living and in spirit form. Bloody Cromwell killed Conor for the castle and, reputedly, with her husband's body not completely cold, Red Mary offered to marry any Cromwellian soldier, provided she could keep her land. So she married a Captain Cooper, who was summarily pushed out of the third storey window. Today the castle exudes a cold and malevolent fury as the wild Burren winds lament around its ruined towers.
