There's a saying in Croatia, "fish must swim three times: first in water, then oil, then wine.
For the French, oil is substituted for butter, but then Dalmatians aren't really into things churned. That feels like too much work. It's easy work upholding this food/wine maxim.
Lucky for me, my parent's family live by the shores of Croatia's largest lake. 10 minutes from the Sea, Vrana has Ottoman and Crusade-era ruins and is the site of my upcoming B&B!
Living off the land and sea as they do, fish, wine and olive oil are all conveniently at hand, and make a Locavore's dream all the more vivid with DIY.
The 'berba' (harvest) occurs around September. A little after grapes are picked.
