Disappearing Lake Shasta: A (Temporary?) Californian Oasis
A 4 1/2 hour drive from the South Bay Area, Lake Shasta offers an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life like little else. For right now, that is. The lake is disappearing at a staggering 8 inches every day. Soon will we be able to see the drowned mining town of Kennett beneath? Who knows.
But for now, get your hands on a houseboat and get in the water. But what's better than that? The Milky Way. Sit between the hills and the glass, rippling reflections, doing nothing but gazing at thousands and thousands of stars, some that look contained within our galaxy and some that do not. Not exactly an everyday occurrence under the streetlights of the never-ending metropolises (metropoli?) nearby.
