Every year the Cascade Cross Country Ski Center located just outside of downtown Lake Placid, NY celebrates the winter full moon with two or three full moon parties on Saturday nights in the winter.
It's a one of a kind experience that doesn't require excessive cross country ski experience to enjoy. You have the option of renting your own skis or snowshoes (or of course bringing your own) or simply walking. For fifteen dollars you get access to the facilities trail systems as well as unlimited beer and hotdogs. You really can't beat that deal.
Cross country skiing at night is beautiful in its own right but Cascade kicks it up a couple notches by lining certain trails with tiki torches and having bonfires every half mile or so were revelers gather around drinking Molson out of a keg and roasting hot dogs on the fire. It felt like a high school party without the fear of getting busted by the cops! The funniest part came when the keg would kick and another was delivered via the back of a snowmobile.
The lodge has it's own party with a band afterwards. You could stay right there on the premises, however I was staying in town and driving so we weren't able to stay for the post-game festivities for too long.
