Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in Florida. In fact, it's one of the largest lakes in the Southeast, so when a friend threw out the idea of biking the lake's surrounding bike path to kick off the New Year, I didn't hesitate. I was up for the challenge and looking forward to the scenery and wildlife.
Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) covers 110 miles, so we decided to break up the journey over two days and stayed at the historic Clewiston Inn. We were blessed with mild days and appearances from the migratory bald eagles, herons, pelicans, ospreys, limpkins, cormorants and the occasional alligator.
If only we had been so lucky with our gear... For those considering this ride, a properly fitted road bike and padded bike shorts will make day two just as enjoyable as day one, but that's not what you remember now, is it?
