Traveling Zimbabwe by Pick-up
We travelled through South Africa and Zimbabwe for 6 weeks by Toyota pick-up, and camped out throughout the trip in National Parks and Preserves. The picture above is us loading onto a small ferry boat called the Sea Lion, and ferrying across Lake Kariba to the town of Kariba, where the Great Dam was built on the Kariba Gorge to dam the mighty Zambezi River. Prior to this, the Kariba Gorge was known only to a few: hunters, explorers, and the local indigenous tribe, called the Batonka People. The Batonka were told that they would have to move inland several miles, and that their river and home was going to be made into a lake. They refused to believe that they had to move or that the River Spirit of the Zambezi, the "NYAMINYAMI", would permit the white man to dam the mighty river.
