Old World Alpine charm and wonder
Before you pull into the charming, old world town of Hallstatt, stop off in the park by the lake at 53 Seelaende. There you can take breathtaking photos of the stunning mountains, the lake, and the delightful architectural wonder that is Hallstatt. After enjoying the little respite, head into the town of Hallstatt.
Hallstatt offers many charming shops and delightful restaurants and can be easily enjoyed in a day. The architecture of the homes and buildings is not to be missed.
Spend some time exploring the Hallstatt salt mines too, the oldest in the world, enjoying the funicular railway to get there. You'll feel like a kid again exploring the underground caves & riding the slides inside.
One of the oldest hotels in town, Seehotel Gruener Baum, is located directly on the lake and in the town square. It is very centrally located and an adorably old-world, where you do feel a bit transported in time.
The area of Lake Hallstatt offers so much to do. You can rent bikes and ride along the lake to the nearby town of Obertraun or spend a day riding around the entire lake, taking in the breathtaking mountainscape along the way. In Obertraun, it is highly recommended to head up to Dachstein, where you can take a gondola up the mountain and hike the rest of the way to the awe-inspiring 5-finger viewing platform, or explore a real ice cave (bring a warm jacket!) or the mammut (mammoth) cave, discovered in the early 1900s.
Plan to enjoy this area for about 3 days. You won't regret it!
