Disconnect at the base of a tropical Bolivian crater
If you're spending more than a few days in the cosmopolitan city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, chances are you'll need a break from the chaos and noise. Seek refuge – and fresh air – at Laguna Volcán, a modest eco and golf resort settled in the crater of an extinct volcano just a couple of hours from the city. If you're short on time for a stay at one of the hotel's private cabañas, a quick visit to the resort is worth it for the views alone. Grab a coffee or go for a quick swim overlooking a lush valley that opens up to Amboró National Park in the distance. It's a birdwatcher's paradise and a great place to disconnect while getting in touch with Bolivia's natural wonders.
Tips to consider: The resort is a popular weekend getaway for local cruceños so book in advance if planning to spend a night or two. The muddy uphill is difficult on many vehicles which could slow your trip and Internet/phone signal is weak to none at the hotel's base.
