It makes sense that you feel like you've been invited for dinner at someone's home at La Teca.
The restaurant is a part of the chef and owner's house located in a nondescript neighborhood about 15 minutes form the central district of Oaxaca City.
It started out as a single room but as word spread about the chef's extraordinary home cooking, she added more and more rooms until they eventually spilled out into her backyard.
Today, La Teca is a favorite for in-the-know locals and tourists alike. The menu is comprised Oaxacan classics like tamales and garnachas, bite-size tortillas topped with slowly-stewed shredded meat, queso fresco, and salsa along with a wide variety of mezcal and local beer.
The best place to find the tastiest food in Oaxaca is in the home kitchens of its matriarchs and even though La Teca is technically a restaurant, it's the closest many tourists will come to eating food lovingly prepared in the intimate setting of a private home.
