I expected to eat a lot of great food in Laos, and the country never disappointed. Noodles, soups and hearty traditional fare were all common, but what I never expected was a delicious high-end dessert – one of the best I’ve ever had.
While visiting the picturesque city of Luang Prabang, I stayed at the luxury resort La Residence Phou Vao. The hotel was wonderful in every way and the friendly staff catered to my every need. It was hot though when I visited, very hot, and on a sweltering afternoon I succumbed to temptation and ordered a refreshing and much needed snack. What was delivered to my table was not just a dessert though; it was a work of art.
The concept was simple, a banana and chocolate spring roll with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Combining Asian culinary style with a decidedly Western influence, the two commingled brilliantly and it was with maximum self-control that I was even able to snap a photo before devouring the plate. Like many food memories, I look back at this photo and don’t just remember the taste and texture of the snack, but the sensations. That afternoon, that moment was one of total and utter contentment. I was as relaxed as I’ve ever been and happy, truly happy to be at that exact place at that exact moment in time. If that’s not what travel is all about, I don’t know what is and there is no better way to recapture this magic than through food.
