Fine dining normally suggests astronomical expense, but at La Marmotte in Telluride you can enjoy a truly sophisticated meal without leaving the entire contents of your wallet behind. We had just arrived in Telluride after a long road trip, and frankly, our chief requirements were (1) vegetables (we'd eaten fast food for 3 days straight) and (2) a soothing glass of red wine. We got both at La Marmotte - the Burgundy by the glass was particularly exquisite - and a lot more besides. Succulent, tender rabbit. A brilliant beef tartare. Dark-and-sweet beets in a toothsome salad. And some absolutely delicious desserts. Service was fantastic - our waiter went out of their way to give us exactly what we fancied eating and drinking, and there was no hint of snootiness, despite the fact we smelled of car seats and stale coffee, and were suffering cabin-fever-induced hysteria. One seriously classy eating hole. I will be returning.
