Barbecued Grasshoppers in Mexico City
After some drinks on the outdoor balcony at the trendy Hotel Condesa nearby, I joined a friend for dinner at La Capital on Av Nuevo Leon. I had heard that chapulinas would be the “adventurous” food experience, if I could find them in the more cosmopolitan parts of Mexico City where I would be hanging out. La Capital came through. The chapulinas were crispy and buttery, and while usually eaten in a taco with guacamole, I thought they were inoffensive enough on the pallet to just pop a few as an appetizer. As I have read elsewhere on AFAR, “If you’re not eating bugs in Mexico, YOU are the weird one.”
