A few years ago we took a walking tour around Kyoto where we visited the workshops of local craftspeople and artisans. I will never forget the stop we made at the studio where a family was working to create traditional indigo-dyed textiles. The space was very rough and functional with dye basins from cement. Inside one we saw a stone mortar and pestle with crushed rose petals they were using to make red dye.
