I walked off of the ship and in to the port of Lombok, I and told a taxi driver to bring me to the best beach on the island: one that wasn't too touristy, that wasn't overly crowded, and one with beautiful blue water. He understood English well, because this was exactly what I got. Kuta beach is on the western side of the island, and there is hardly anyone there besides locals. There are a few surf shacks and hotels with some bronzed, matted-hair surfers who, it's obvious, have been there for quite some time; but for the most part, you'll have the beach to yourself. We dipped in to a hotel to grab some food and enjoy the pool for a bit. If you're looking for a beach with more restaurants, shops and things to do, continue south. If you're wanting something raw and uninhabited, come to Kuta.
