Kuala Selangor

The town of Kuala Selangor was conquered by the Dutch in the late 18th century, and they left their mark at Fort Altingsburg, also known as Kota Melawati. The original cannons are still intact, as is the outdoor court where criminals were executed. From the Kuala Selangor jetty, small, motorized boats move swiftly through the water to one of the best-preserved tracts of coastal mangroves in Malaysia. The area is most famous for the millions of fireflies that emerge each evening, though there are plenty of other animals to see before sundown, from silvered leaf monkeys to a variety of bird species.
