Kowloon Walled City Park

In the early 1800s, a small fortress was built at a strategic beachhead on the Kowloon Peninsula. When the British began occupying Hong Kong in 1841, the fortress became vital to China's maritime defenses, and soon a stone wall and watchtowers were built to surround military buildings and soldiers' quarters. Though most of the complex was destroyed or dismantled over the decades, various relics have been incorporated into the lovely park at the site, which was designed after a Jiangnan garden.
