We were promised a "sunset boat ride" with our romantic package at a resort in Cochin. The resort itself left much to be desired, but this boat ride was absolutely gorgeous. A 75+ year old man wearing a turban around his head and a twinkle in his eye seated us in an impossibly small row boat (with himself in the middle, mind you ... so there was to be no actual romance on this boat) took us around the backwaters right as the sun was setting. I have so many breathtaking photos of this one hour ... we sat in absolute silence, watching the color of the sky change, and the trees and flowers bend to the will of the wind. It was enchanting and lovely, and worth every rupee we spent on the rest of the resort! The funny thing is, we stayed at the Taj Kumarakom Resort the following day and their sunset cruise involved a chai bar with Indian snacks, ice-breaker activities with other guests, and seats covered in linen with armrests. However, it paled in comparison to the intimate half hour we spent with the old man, running our fingers over the water and marveling at the birds that flew inches away from our face. The water and the old man had a deep friendship ... it spoke to him, as if it knew we were just passing by. I loved every moment.
