Kleine Anna, on the corner of Mainzer Landstrasse and Ludwigstrasse offers bliss-on-toast to the Frankfurt breakfast and lunch crowd. Sticking to a single winning dish--Brot Belage, or warm bread with a choice of spreads--the place packs them in at noon. Go a little later, though, and you'll find a spot inside, or at one of the outdoor picnic tables.
Options are virtually endless, with more than twenty luscious spreads plus the toppings of your choice, made to order. You can also split an order, to add even more variety to your meal. Choose your bread and the number of slices, a spread for each, then a topping--mint leaves, walnuts, veggies, a range of sliced meats.
My picks from a whirlwind of layering: barlauch (wild garlic) on whole wheat, topped with a thin slice of herb-roasted ham and a round of roasted, marinated eggplant; and apple-wine chorizo, topped with a slice of Edamer cheese.
Grab a drink from the cooler, or order from a range of coffees and teas, Schorles (spritzers) and Frankfurt's own apple wine. Add a freshly made salad, large or small. Lunch, sorted.
Desserts are simple but yummy. Try a quark torte, or a chocolate chip cookie. Either one pairs perfectly with a cup of espresso or tea.
Kleine Anna has friendly counter staff and a cozy atmosphere, and is just a five-minute walk from the culinary wasteland of Frankfurt's Main Station. The restaurant is open Monday-Friday from 09:00 am to 4:00 pm.
