Relive the Crusades at Karak
The number-one highlight of the King's Highway is Karak Castle, with its immense fortifications dominating the provincial town of Karak. Built in AD 1140, Karak was one of the last outposts held by the Crusaders after Jerusalem was recaptured by Salah ad-Din in 1187 (the castle occupants finally succumbed to Salah ad-Din's victory after a drawn-out siege the following year). This is Jordan's best preserved Crusader castle, with tunnels, dark chambers and dungeons, and vast arched-roof stables to explore. If you head east out of town, past the Cairwan Hotel, there is a lookout point where you can get a spectacular view of the castle in its entirety.
