We chose Kauai for our first visit to the Hawaiian islands for two reasons: first, because my wife's mother had spent time there in the 70's, and second, the island has a reputation (and nickname) for being a "green island" with lush vegetation and plentiful tropical rainfall. We stood at this spot on Kapaa Beach and I remember telling my wife "your mom probably stood here". Her mother had passed away 10 years prior to that day, so it was a moving moment for both of us. The beauty of this scene coupled with the attached memory was enough to permanently burn the experience in our minds. This photo barely does it justice.
For those considering Kauai, it really is a beautiful island that feels far removed from the touristy feel most beach/island resorts are known for. The island is spectacularly green and the people are friendly. I recommend Kapaa's bed and breakfasts for a peaceful, relaxing vacation in a truly lovely place.
