Joe Marzilli’s Old Canteen Italian Restaurant

120 Atwells Avenue

Marzilli’s is a landmark on Federal Hill, just up from downtown Providence. When you pass under the arch with the pineapple, you’re there. Italian restaurants that accompany the Old Canteen along Atwells Avenue are historic and no nonsense. The pastas are unpretentious, the wait staff staunchly professional and the notion that you’re there for a meal, not to just eat, is a protected tradition. Case in point: the Marzilli’s seven course meals are priced below ordering a salad and an entree. Keep your disbelief close and you appetite closer. Order fearlessly; everything is classically Italian and played out in generous proportions. The decor looks, probably is, original and well preserved. No apologies for house chianti, it’s what to drink. The dining room could easily be the backdrop for an old mobster movie. Light. Camera. Marzilli’s!
