Guangzhoue's Best Pulled Noodles and Edible Eyeballs
I went to Jiu Mao Jiu for the best pulled noodles in Guangzhou, as advertised by Andrew ZImmern's show, and they didn't disappoint. Both their noodles and their broth were some of the best I've had in Guangzhou, and it was fun to watch the noodle production. But what sticks out most in my mind are the "edible eyeballs."
Now I know they're not edible eyeballs (at least the rational part of me does), but when I ordered them from a picture and for days afterward, that was how I referred to them. Some of my Chinese friends had no clue what they were; others gave me conflicting answers.
We finally came to a consensus: These are pickled quail eggs.
They taste slightly slufur-ish. You may not know how to feel about the first egg you pop into your mouth, and from the third one on they may get off-putting. But that second and third egg... they are pretty wonderful.
Besides, what's better than the experience of eating something that you will be forever half-hoping/dreading was an eyeball?
