Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Jinhae-gu, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea

If you happen to be in Korea in late March or early April, consider hitting the cherry blossom festival in the city of Jinhae. We hired a driver and did it as a day trip from Busan. The traffic is horrible. But the cherry blossoms are beautiful. And the crowd is fascinating. I found that seeing all these people--so many people--coming out to see cherry blossoms somehow restored my faith in humanity. There are several stretches of cherry trees in different parts of town, which is why it’s nice to have a driver. This photo was taken along the railroad tracks, where you can pose for pictures as you hang off a parked train. In another part of town, a creek crossed by many picturesque bridges is lined with trees. Although the trees might be outnumbered by selfie sticks. That’s where you’ll find lots of food stands. I tried something that looked like a grilled cheese but instead of cheese it was filled with cherry blossom ice cream. I also had sauteed octopus as well as both grilled chicken and fried potatoes on a stick. You can’t have a festival without food on a stick. Prepare yourself for the crowds, and see them as part of the experience
