The main draw in Bromo, on the island of Java in Indonesia is sunrise at Mt. Bromo. However, having stayed at the modern-yet-luxurious guest house: Java Banana, I can now safely say Mt. Bromo isn't the only reason to visit Probolinggo.
Java Banana was created by photographer and Indonesian banker, Sigit Pramono. Along with the guest rooms, restaurant and store, there is an art gallery which features his stunning large-scale nature photographs and the work of other Indonesian artists who, like him, are inspired by the majestic nature of the volcanic zone in which the lodge is located.
Each guest room is appointed with all the modern luxuries a traveler looks for, with private balconies in which to bring the outside in and decor that reflects the beauty of Bromo. Every room features one of Pramono's stunning nature photographs.
Food at the restaurant is amongst the best I had anywhere in Indonesia and while most of it is distinctly Indonesian, there are options enough to please any palate. Try the sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf for what was my favorite snack!
If you're visiting to do the standard sunrise trek, the lodge can arrange that experience for you as well, or suggest the best tour companies who can. However, this lodge above the clouds in sleepy Probolinggo is absolutely wonderful enough to be a peaceful, calming destination in and of itself. With no cell service and no WiFi, it's a great retreat.
