The James River Foot Bridge is part of the Appalachian Trail, about an hour from Lynchburg, VA and honors William T. Foot. He was a hiking enthusiast and his vision made this old rail bridge a reality for hikers. He as his wife Laurie were the first to complete the coast-to-coast American Discovery Trial in 1997. Naturally he was also a thru-hiker of the Appalachian Trail.
Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and stop at the James River Valley Parking area for some short hiking. Make your way to the Johnson Farm - an old apple farm homestead near the Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant. At 2,000 to 3,000 ft. above sea level, the mountain air will fill your lungs with enough pure oxygen for a week!
