"Wake up the Earth!" in Boston
This highlight is a bit different than the usual. It's not a travel experience at all; it's a "home" experience, because I love my neighborhood and want visitors to get off the beaten path in Boston! "Wake up the Earth!" is an annual Spring festival on the first Saturday in May, in the neighborhood of Jamaica Plain (JP for short). This year's theme was dragons, for the Chinese Year of the Dragon, and everyone was encouraged to dress up as a dragon for the parade. The parade winds through JP and ends up at a park, where there's an all-day festival with music, art, and food. It's a political festival too, because it celebrates the neighborhood's victory over a highway extension in 1979. The highway would have cut right through the neighborhood, but the community won, and now we have a subway line AND a park -- much better than a 6-lane road! Come visit.
