The Jacques Cartier Heritage Walk through Gaspé takes you past 15 sites significant to the history of Canada. One of these, the Jacques Cartier Monument Historic Site, marks the first encounter between Jacques Cartier and the native Iroquois in 1534; another, the 1934 Commemorative Cross—a 10-meter-tall (33-foot-tall) granite monolith—celebrates the 400th anniversary of Cartier’s claiming possession of the territory on behalf of the King of France.
