Exile in Isole Tremiti
Around 8 A.D., the emperor Augustus sent his granddaughter, Julia the Younger, into exile here for, among other reasons, her scandalous behaviour. While conditions back then were undoubtedly considerably harsher than today, she may very well have had the last laugh. This gorgeous and serene archipelago in the Adriatic beckons to those in search of a more authentic Italian summer holiday than can be found in more heavily trod locales. With dozens of delightful bays in which to swim and snorkel and a smattering of restaurants serving simple, fresh-from-the-sea fare, Isole Tremiti is a place to which many would be happily banished.
