Nicaragua is full of beautiful scenery and opportunities to learn about the land and waters around and in the country. Made of volcanoes, many of the outdoor activities in the country involve engaging with the mountains and craters.
Even kayaking through Las Isletas in Lake Nicaragua is an education about the violent history in the area. The islands are piles of lava rock that blew out of the adjacent Mombacho Volcano.
Our guide explained how the islands were formed, pointed out various birds throughout the tour, and indicated which islands were inhabited by the wealthy (and the amenities they had shipped and installed on their private islands).
A kayak tour through the little islands was informative and beautiful. It was also hot and dehydrating - so bring water, sunscreen, and a waterproof camera!
