Run Down the Dunes to Lake Michigan
Just a 45-minute drive from the Chicago’s downtown Loop, 200 foot sand dunes tower over the wild untrammeled shores of Lake Michigan. The Indiana Dunes State Park has 2,000+ acres of wilderness crisscrossed with hiking trails and camping spots and it's the perfect retreat when the urban hustle of Chicago gets to be too much. Cross country ski over the dunes when the snow falls, hike through the woods to see the turning leaves, and make use of the camping facilities to you can wake to the sunrise over the lake. There’s no entry fee, the Nature Center that provides history and ecology information is open 9:30-4:30 every day and camping costs $10-40 depending on the electrical hook up you require.
