You climb up a hill and behind the remains of a house you enter the mine through a long, dark pathway lit along the way by your guide, Badega, with an ancient gas lantern. The sounds of trickling water run around you and on your feet. As you enter the mine more lanterns are lit as well as candles on each memorial... it is breathtaking. Each sculpture was personalized to the miner that died while working in the mines. The sculptures were made from the clay inside the mine and are slowly eroding away but with the help from a local arts organization the guide is recreating each with proper materials to withstand the environment.
