A good choice for history buffs, families with children, or those looking for a diversion from the typical beach scene should visit Hulishan Fortress (湖里山炮台), sprawling across a hilltop bluff overlooking Baicheng Beach near Xiamen University. Although the site has been used for coastal defense since as long back as 1387, the current fortifications date to 1892 in the waning days of the Qing Dynasty. At that time the Japanese had their eye on Taiwan and the Qing government deemed Xiamen an important bulwark in China's defense against the Japanese, as well as other enemies. For around 25 RMB admission, visitors can explore the grounds and examine the hundreds of antique, rusting cannons.
