Ababey Road and The Kid Commute
Japan has some of the cutest kids in the world—polite, curious, and full of energy, they are in abundance in Tokyo despite the overall decline in childbirths that has dogged the nation since the early 2000s. The number of small children, combined with the incredible volume of motor vehicles and busy streets in the city, has led to several unique approaches to child traffic safety, especially for pre-schoolers. One of these phenomena is the “kid cart”—kindergarteners and toddlers in day care are rounded up and placed in large-scale carts when they go out for walks with their teachers/minders to ensure they are protected from running into a moving car or other mishaps. In addition to being a practical solution to a potentially dangerous issue, the kid carts are guaranteed to put a smile on the face of even the most jaded and exhausted adult ☺
