As the Hudson river snaked around Constitution Island, 55 miles north of Manhattan, I imagined that I was an intrepid sailor on a Dutch East India company vessel sailing around the bend 400 years ago. But not for long. As waves lashed around me I was reminded that mine was a humble Kayak.
The Hudson River offers amazing views, especially as October rolls in, bringing with it copper red, saffron and burgundy hues that start spreading across the valley like a wild fire.
On the left bank is the imposing West Point Academy and an equally impressive Storm King Mountain. To the right the historic river town of Cold Spring and Constitution marsh. You can rent a Kayak from Hudson River Expeditions and spend an afternoon in the marsh or if you are lucky an afternoon on Bannerman Island. Either way you can't go wrong.
