As I stood on my balcony at the Tivoli Hotel on the Avenida Liberdade, I gazed down at the beautiful Portuguese calcada ( pavement). The small blocks are fashioned into different designs. The sidewalks of the Avenida Liberdade have elaborate medallion designs.
I spend a lot of time when in Lisbon admiring the Avenida. It's so alive with the sounds of traffic - the cars, taxis, buses, and motor scooters. City sounds.
The little kiosks are great places to stop for a cool drink or an espresso. I sit and feel happy and excited. After shopping, I need to relax!
The elegant stores that line the street offer great shopping in stores like Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton. What could be more fun than to shop or window shop in stores like that?
There are quite a few 4 and 5 star hotels on the Avenida Liberdade. I enjoy the Hotel Tivoli because of its central location. The pool at the Tivoli's sister hotel, The Tivoli Jardim, is very nice and relaxing. The included breakfast at the Tivoli is an elegant buffet. It's a great way to prepare for another day of adventure in Lisbon.
The Ritz is top rate but too far up the Avenue for me. I like to be in the middle of everything.
Check the Portuguese Tourist Board on-line for a list of hotels.
(The York House and the Lapa Palace are also favorites of mine in Lisbon, but they are not in the center of Lisbon. They are about a ten minute taxi or trolley ride away).
