It's impossible to leave Slovenian, especially the Lake Bled region, without trying a slice of cream cake. Nearly every restaurant and cafe will have the iconic dessert on its menu, but Sava Hotel on Lake Bled claims to be the creator of cream cake, with the original recipe dating back to the 1940s.
What sets Sava's cream cake apart? Apparently the chefs fold the puff pastry seven times and let it rest overnight so that it's incredibly light when baked the next morning. Today, the hotel offers a chocolate and berry version as well. My waitress told me she prefers chocolate but I stuck to the original and was perfectly satisfied. Whether or not the Sava's cream cake is the best may be debatable, but a slice of that cake with a view of the lake is pretty hard to beat.
