Converted Monastery in Cusco, Peru
When we landed in Cusco, we immediately knew the experience would be magical. When we pulled into our hotel, we were blown away. Being that we were splurging a bit for our honeymoon, we were able to experience Orient Express' Hotel Monasterio which was a highlight of our Cusco experience in and of itself. The hotel was originally built as a monastery and has since been converted, retaining this incredible sense of history and allure. The original chapel still remains and guests are able to pop in and poke around. The rooms are furnished with antique-chic pieces; intricate frames, Franciscan paintings and carefully selected tables along side L'Occitane body products and plush robes. It's the ultimate feeling of authenticity plus luxe living, something Orient Express has seemed to master. Beyond that, the service was impeccable and the location was unbeatable. As soon as you exit Hotel Monasterio, you are a short walk from the Plaza de Armas, the cultural heart of Cusco. One thing to be aware of: the altitude (12'000+ feet) is no joke in Cusco. My counterpart was seriously feeling the effects of the altitude by day two. Drink coca tea or borrow the hotel's oxygen tanks if you need a little boost!
