Hotel Lux
This recently refurbished hotel is a low-key, friendly establishment whose modern, understated rooms, commitment to local artists, and elegant cocktail bar and restaurant have made it popular with both visitors and locals.

There’s no reception as such, and no elevator either. Instead, a dramatic spiral wooden staircase leads directly up to the rooms, which are decorated in smart, modern style, with colorful touches such as lime-green armchairs matched to wood paneling and natural, earthy tones.

Neighborhood Vibe
With a location in Munich’s Altstadt (Old Town), the buzzing Marienplatz and ever-popular Hofbräuhaus are right on the doorstep. You can visit the square’s neo-Gothic town hall or hit the adjacent pedestrian zone for abundant shopping and entertainment opportunities; Dallmayr and Maximilianstrasse have heaps of designer stores. The Englischer Garten, one of the world's largest public parks—full of walking paths, historic buildings, and lakes—is also just a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Need to Know
Rooms: 17 rooms, from $160.
Check-in: 2 p.m.; check-out: 11 a.m.
Dining options: What it lacks in space and services, Lux makes up for in character. The restaurant serves up a largely European menu (risotto, ratatouille, gratin) and meat dishes that are mostly organic. The small bar, decorated with a glass-paneled ceiling, floral wallpaper, and plush, red velvet booths, doubles as a quaint café during the daytime—complete with a gourmet delicatessen selling local cuisine. In the evening, the bar is popular with locals and guests alike.
Spa and gym details: There are no spa, gym, or massage services on-site.
Insider Tips
Who it’s for: Those seeking modern comforts without the pretension or price tag.
Our favorite rooms: Nature lovers may want to book the curious Ponyhof Room, a Mediterranean-esque blue and white room plastered with bird motifs. Designed by local artist Hans Langner (aka Birdman), it has a private bathroom on a separate floor.
Special sips: The bar has some rare spirits on offer, including saffron-infused Old Raj gin and unusual bourbons.
