From north to south, Vietnam is a contrast of distinctly local cultures. This is a land of magic and mystery, whose rich history and fascinating cultural traditions are trumped only by the astonishing variety of its cuisine and the unfailing warmth and graciousness of its people. Even with its vibrant economic growth, the country is as charming, picturesque and wondrous as it was a decade ago. Here, historic must-sees, colonial gems and colourful costal vistas await.
The fact that the concept of “face” remains prominent here is very telling of the virtues of its people. You lose face if you display anger or belittle people. Patience is essential here, as things happen at a slower pace. It’s also very important to never publicly humiliate or otherwise put a person in a compromising position that will cause him or her to lose face – a respect for others is paramount.
And that’s one of our favourite things about Vietnam; in a place resplendent with UNESCO-protected sites and centuries-old temples, it’s the warmth of the people that most captures our attention.
