The East Texas Piney Woods region may take your breath away as you stretch your neck backwards and gaze up at the streams of sunlight shining through the canopy of towering pines. But from Love’s Lookout, an elevated spot that is perched on top of a scenic ridge that extends for nine miles, you get a different view. Some locals are sure they can see all the way to Louisiana on a clear day. At an elevation of 720 feet above sea level, the best times to drive up Highway 69 and enjoy a picnic at this scenic spot are the spring and fall. For the weather, of course, but also to catch the spring flowers and dogwoods in full bloom, and to admire the fall foliage in shades of yellow, red, and purple, depending on which season you choose.
