Hells Gate Geothermal Park and Mud Bath Spa

State Highway 30, New Zealand

New Zealand’s only Maori-owned thermal park, Hells Gate belongs to the Ngati Rangiteaorere, a tribe that has used the geothermal waters of this land to cook, bathe and heal for more than 700 years. Alongside observing Hells Gate’s attractions like the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, you can bathe in the sulfurous waters as Maori warriors did after battle. Just slather mud all over yourself at the Hells Gate Spa (or take the more pampered and private approach at the New Zealand Spa, also on-site). For an even deeper experience of Maori culture, try your hand at wood carving.
