Experience American Aristocracy at Hearst Castle
If you're planning a trip up Highway 1 don't forget to make a stop and join one of the guided tours at Hearst Castle. William Randolph Hearst, American newspaper publisher and media mogul, started building the incredible estate in 1919 on ranchland inherited from his parents. Overlooking the village of San Simeon in 1919, Hearst named the estate "La Cuesta Encantada" which is Spanish for The Enchanted Hill. By 1947, the hilltop complex included a twin-towered main building, three guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools.
