Very Special Hammocks
In the Yucatan Peninsula, lying on the ubiquitous hamaca (hammock) made me wonder why I haven't slept on a hammock all my life. Hence I knew I had to buy a hammock in order to recreate my experience back home.
On the outskirts of Valladolid is the town of Ebtun where there is a prison selling hammocks handmade by their prisoners. The hammocks here are supposed to be some of the best around and are known for their quality and comfort. They are made of nylon, double stranded and tightly woven; hence prices are higher compared to the low quality ones sold in touristy areas. They come in an assortment of bright technicolors and three sizes: single, matrimonial (double) and family.
I paid about 90USD for a double, prices are non-negotiable. The hammock also comes tagged with the name of the prisoner who made it.
To get here, drive a few kilometers west of Valladolid, you will pass by the prison on your way to Chichen Itzá.
