If you're looking for a tasty lunch or two-for-five happy hour specials that'll ice your brain over on a hot day, this is your spot. Located on the French side of St. Martin, Baie Rouge is a great place for both fun relaxation.
Gus' Beach Bar offers cheap (but well-made drinks), excellent food (think chicken and beef kebabs, french fries, and fresh vegetables), plus tables, shaded seating, and beach chairs for rent. Chez Raymond, directly next door, offers similar accommodations, plus a bigger open-air seating area and snorkel gear.
If you order something from either restaurant, be prepared to wait. I remember thinking to myself that they might be killing the cow for the time they took, but it was well-worth the suspense. In the mean time, soak up the private feel of this beach, free of tourist hoards.
The area is accessible by road, with only a brief walk down some dilapitated steps. Be aware that members from both businesses will try to draw you to either Gus' or Raymond's once in the parking lot area, but you probably won't know who's with who until you're seated and committed. US dollars, euros, and the Dutch-side currency (guilders) are all accepted.
